Unlike most exams, you can’t just buy an NCLEX seat—your state board of nursing has to authorize you first. Registration is a three-way handshake between you, the board, and Pearson VUE.
Here’s the sequence, and how to avoid the delays that cost people their preferred test dates.
The three-step sequence
- Apply for licensure with your state board of nursing. Requirements and fees vary by state, and this is the slow step.
- Register with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee (currently $200 for U.S. licensure).
- Wait for your Authorization to Test (ATT) email. Only after it arrives can you book a seat.
Your ATT has an expiration date
The ATT is valid for a limited window—typically around 90 days—and it can’t be extended. If it lapses before you test, you forfeit the fee and register again.
Book as soon as the ATT arrives. Popular test centers fill weeks out, especially in graduation season from May through July.
Test day basics
- Bring a government-issued photo ID that matches your registration name exactly.
- Expect a palm-vein scan and photo at check-in.
- Plan for up to five hours, though many candidates finish well under that.
