How long should you study for the PMP?

An eight-to-twelve week plan around a full-time job, from the ECO to full 180-question simulations.

Most PMP candidates prepare in eight to twelve weeks around a full-time job—about an hour a day, more on weekends.

The exam rewards a particular way of thinking, so the plan matters as much as the hours.

Weeks 1–4: learn the terrain

Work from the Exam Content Outline (ECO)—it, not any textbook, defines the exam. Split your attention across predictive, agile, and hybrid delivery: roughly half the exam draws on agile and hybrid situations.

Weeks 5–8: switch to question-first prep

Daily question blocks with rationale review, tuning your instincts to the PMI mindset: empower the team, prevent problems upstream, escalate only when you must.

The correct answer is what a textbook servant-leader would do—which is not always what your workplace does.

The final two weeks: stamina

Sit at least two full 180-question, 230-minute simulations with realistic breaks. Endurance at hour three is trainable, and exam day is the wrong place to train it.
